Kindness First, Then Claws

A Tales Beyond the Roll Novel

Coming February 2027

One has a lute, bear law, and very little fear. The other has a spellbook, a mission, and considerably better judgment. Neither planned on finding the other, but trouble made sure their paths crossed anyway.

About the Book

Kindness First, Then Claws

A Tales Beyond the Roll Novel

Coming February 2027

Gildie Lockhart has spent eighteen years learning the most important rules of life from the two bears who raised her: be kind, protect the small, and when kindness fails, use claws.

Now, armed with a lute, a little magic, and far too many honey cakes, she has finally left the forests of Northgroves in search of adventure.

Cera Valewyn would prefer considerably more preparation.

The young elven wizard has been sent to investigate a string of impossible magical disturbances. Streams flow the wrong way, spells behave strangely, and forgotten ruins are stirring beneath the forest. But when her search leads to a mysterious group obsessed with the legendary Drakewardens, Cera becomes part of the mystery herself.

Their paths collide over Nora, an eight-year-old girl stolen from her home and caught in the middle of a dangerous plan she does not understand.

With a nervous creature scholar, a cursed elf, and one very opinionated living chest along for the journey, Gildie and Cera uncover a growing obsession with recreating the legendary heroes of old, no matter the cost.

Legends may be born through blood and fire.
But being a hero has never been about becoming a legend.

Meet the Cast

Two heroines. One impossible mystery. More trouble than either of them ordered.

Before the chaos fully gets its way, meet the two women at the heart of Kindness First, Then Claws.

Portrait of Gildie Lockhart
Gildie Lockhart

Raised by bears. Powered by heart.

Gildie was raised in the forests of Northgroves by two bears who taught her the rules that matter most: be kind, protect the small, and when kindness fails, use claws.

She steps into adventure with a lute, a little magic, and the kind of courage that shows up long before a proper plan does.

Cera Valewyn

The wizard who would prefer more preparation.

Cera comes from Mistgrove with a sharp mind, a careful nature, and a mission to investigate impossible magical disturbances spreading through the world around her.

But with whispers of the Drakewardens, dangerous ruins stirring awake, and far too many surprises for her liking, Cera is about to discover that some stories refuse to stay neatly under control.

Companions & Chaos

Every adventure needs good company. This one got these four.

Gildie and Cera may be at the heart of the story, but they are far from traveling alone. Between questionable courage, sharp teeth, unsettling magic, and one very curious river drake, the road rarely stays quiet for long.

Chesty, a small wooden chestling with amber eyes and sharp teeth

Chesty

Small, loyal, opinionated, and equipped with far more teeth than any piece of luggage should have, Chesty has a habit of making himself useful in ways no ordinary chest could.

Triton, a young green and teal river drake

Triton

Triton is a young river drake who approaches the world with bright eyed curiosity and absolutely no reason to believe he should leave anything alone.

Sorren, a green scaled creature scholar in a worn wizard hat

Sorren

Sorren has devoted his life to studying dangerous creatures. Unfortunately, knowing exactly how terrifying something is has done very little to make him less afraid of it.

Nightmare, a cursed elf with a dark and unsettling appearance

Nightmare

Nightmare’s curse gave him an appearance people tend to remember. He may look like the most alarming member of the group, but appearances have a habit of telling only part of the story.
